Martin Limb, MA MRCSLT MASLTIP UKCP UKCP Registered Psychotherapist

MA, Dip Hyp, ( Advanced), UKCP, MASLTIP MRCSLT IATE Certificate in Child/Adolescent Counselling Skills

I am a member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, ( UKCP), which is one of the main bodies regulating the profession of psychotherapy in the UK.

What's the difference between a psychotherapist and a counsellor?

My personal view is that in practice, there is very little. The similarities, I believe, outweigh the differences. Some therapists may choose to call themselves counsellors, while others – even with identical qualifications – may call themselves psychotherapists. As I am a member of the UKCP, I use the latter term.

I have heard it said that counsellors may offer more short-term help to clients, whereas psychotherapy is a longer term or somehow a 'deeper' process. Yet there are many people I see who come along to discuss problems only requiring a short period of therapy, as well as those needing longer term help. At the same time, I am aware of counsellors who see people with a wide variety of problems—both long and short term.

UKCP registered psychotherapists are required to have done a training, including supervised practice , over a period of at least four years prior to registration,

I am registered as working with both Adults and Children.

Within my work, I follow all national and local safeguarding procedures. The safety of clients, whether adults or children, is of paramount importance.

I am covered by full professional indemnity insurance, and have an enhanced CRB check.
